Nurse practitioners in our 24-bed Surgical, Trauma and Transplant Intensive Care Unit (SICU) care for patients with the highest severity of illness of all the patients in the hospital. We use up-to-date technology and advanced bedside monitoring and computerized documentation, and a team approach to patient centered care with highly skilled multidisciplinary team members and knowledgeable dedicated staff. Our patient population includes critically ill trauma and solid organ transplant patients.

Essential Duties:

  • The Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership and patient care management across the health care continuum including preventative care acute care through discharge, and ambulatory care environments.
  • Incorporates both independent decision-making abilities and collaboration with rotating residents and fellows, the board certified/eligible physician, subspecialty consultants, and a multidisciplinary team of experts, including, but not limited to pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and rehabilitation experts, to provide expert care to the patients.
  • Responsible to the Medical Director, the Lead Nurse Practitioner, and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and functions as an integral part of the medical team.
  • Provides individualized care upholding CSHS philosophies including but not limited to care consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, the Plan for Provision of Nursing Care, the Plan for Provision of Patient Care, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan, the Professional Organization Standards, Code of Conduct, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide care to special patient population and those with diverse cultural background.
  • Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to age and developmental milestones of the population(s) served which may include adolescent, adult, geriatric.
  • Identifies the ability of age specific population served to follow direction/instructions and give consent.
  • Identifies safety concerns and institute measures to provide safe environment and provide appropriate assessment, intervention, and evaluation of patients with consideration of developmental milestones in the population served.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master of Nursing Degree required
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse practitioner program required

License/Certifications:

  • Current State of California Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner License required
  • National Certification by respective accredited professional nursing organization such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) required (or eligible to obtain)
  • Current NP Furnishing License required
  • DEA license required
  • ACLS certification from the American Heart Association required
  • AGACNP or Inpatient NP experience

Experience:

  • 2 years of acute care nursing experience
  • 2 years of experience managing SICU patients preferred
  • ICU experience required
  • 2 years experience as a Nurse Practitioner in SICU strongly preferred

Coverage: Primarily coverage of evening and night hours, including on weekends, after a period of orientation. Schedule flexibility is desired, as coverage may be altered based on the team size.
