What you will be doing in this role:

The Senior Communications Specialist on the External Communications team will develop and oversee a communications strategy to position Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s as a national leader and innovator in children’s health. This professional, ideally possessing communications experience in a children’s hospital setting, will promote clinical and research priorities to enhance Guerin Children’s reputation among consumer, physician and academic audiences. The Senior Communications Specialist will serve as a trusted adviser to Guerin Children’s leadership, cultivating strong relationships with physicians, investigators and other leaders to deliver a wide range of communications assets. The Senior Communications Specialist will build a robust internal communications function and provide external communications support, including identifying and pitching stories to the news media while assisting the executive director and other Guerin Children’s leadership with external-facing materials for social media, presentations and other channels as needed. This individual will have an ability to switch effortlessly between patient features and complex science, covering both with the same level of mastery. This person will collaborate with Service Line Marketing, Social Media and other Marketing/Communications teams to juggle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced and engaging environment, managing workflows and responsibilities to meet time-sensitive communications needs. The Senior Communications Specialist will be a self-starter, a strategic planner and a highly sophisticated writer with a proven track record of delivering effective healthcare communications, preferably in an academic medical center setting. Primary duties include:

  • Responsible for covering Guerin Children’s clinical and research areas, providing highly responsive and timely internal and external communications support for a range of needs and requests. Directly supports Guerin Children’s executive director and other senior leaders as needed.
  • Proactively generate Guerin Children’s text and video content, successfully pitch content to news media and run in Cedars-Sinai digital channels in conjunction with social media. Content includes patient features, scientific research studies and consumer news based on identified priorities. Produce clear, well-written, grammatically correct and factually accurate copy and content.
  • Keep up with general U.S. health news and be able to pivot to quickly offer media interviews with Cedars-Sinai experts and/or generate timely content for the Cedars-Sinai Newsroom and for distribution to media.
  • Keep up to date with U.S. pediatric health news and trends. Successfully identify, write and pitch feature and science stories to local, national and trade media. Secure high-level earned media placements in major media and develop relationships with key reporters.
  • Maintain confidentiality as required by Cedars-Sinai policy and state and federal law.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or a related field required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience writing, editing, developing and delivering in-depth content or related communications experience required.
  • Proven experience of at least 5 years in an academic medical center, hospital or healthcare, broadcast news, nonprofit or and/or foundation experience preferred.
