What will you be doing:

The Senior Orthopedic Cast Technician (Sports Medicine) will perform a variety of tasks associated with orthopedic casting procedures under the instruction of a provider in the Clinic. Works independently under the general supervision of a physician and is evaluated by satisfactory correction of orthopedic problems.

  • Positions patient for procedure and notes the degree of discomfort experienced by the patient. Also instructs patient in cast care, wound care, swelling and how to remove and apply splints.
  • Assists with application and execution of orthopedic procedures and services concerning the orthopedic patient. (i.e. apply slings, casts, inspect and adjust bandages and equipment needed for orthopedic care) under Physician, NP or PA direction.
  • Performs designated diagnostic tests as directed by provided and assists in follow-up scheduling needs.
  • Provides product and technical assistance for customers, including product preparation and procedural consultation for physicians and staff as appropriate. Assists with patient education.
  • Applies and removes a variety of splints, plaster and fiberglass casts and requests x-rays as indicated under the direction of a physician. Performs special procedures as windowing and wedging and assists the physician in complex special procedures as removal of pins and application of traction. Responsible for inventory, ordering and receiving of all casting supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and re-processes equipment and supplies based on standard work and department guidelines.
  • Assists physician with scribing in the EMR during office exams when needed.
  • Sets up exam and procedure room based on patient visit needs. 
  • Assists physician, NP or PA in the examination room/procedure room as needed for data collection of vital signs, symptoms, analysis, treatment and care of the orthopedic patient. Records information in medical records.
  • Trains and assists other team members within scope.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements:

One (1) plus years’ experience as Registered Orthopedic Technician with casting and splinting experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in patient care work. 

Three (3) plus years of medical assistant experience preferred.

Educational/Licensure/Certifications Requirements:

High School Diplma/GED.

Vocational/Technical Diploma – Medical Assistant from an accredited school.

Basic Life Support (BLS).

Registered Orthopedic Technician (ROT) from the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals.

Orthopedic Technician Certified (OTC) from National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologies preferred.
