Surgical Tech I - 10-hour Shifts - Marina del Rey Hospital
Job Description

Responsibilities
As a Surgical Technologist I, your main duties will involve:
- Performs first scrub role in basic surgical procedures.
- Prepares the operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures. Pre-operative duties include performing a surgical scrub, donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). Prepares sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique. Confirms that instruments function properly and have been properly sterilized. Maintains the availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
- Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for the procedure. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving, assists with the draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Performs appropriate intraoperative count (instruments, sponges, needles), and labels all medication.
- Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the “Time Out” process.
- Assists the surgeon by performing the following tasks at the sterile field: Passing supplies, equipment, or instruments, sponging, or suctioning at the operative site. Prepares and cuts suture material, transfers, but does not administer drugs within the sterile field. Handles specimen. Holds retractors and other instruments, manipulates the endoscopic camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connects drains to suction apparatus and applies dressings to closed wounds.
- Controls and maintains perioperative environments (i.e., asepsis, electrical safety, waste management, and traffic patterns). Establishes and maintains a sterile field. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment. Reduces the risk of health care-acquired infection by complying with current CDC hand washing guidelines.
- Demonstrates clinical competency and technical skills for general and special populations. Aware of patient needs while assisting the RN in implementing the plan of care for each patient. Assists the RN in prioritizing job duties, physician requests, and interdepartmental procedures as directed by RN.
- Demonstrates knowledge about the equipment used in assigned areas including the care, handling, operations, troubleshooting, and safety precautions. Recognizes malfunctions and initiates repairs appropriately. Assembles processes and maintains instruments relevant to the assigned area. Monitors and updates inventory within the area as assigned.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization on completion of the surgery. Assists in storing, stocking supplies, and updates surgeons’ preference lists as needed.
- Assists the surgical team with cleaning of the operating room on completion of the surgery.
- Reduces the risk of patient harm resulting from falls. Observes patients for the risk of falling and takes action to prevent patient falls.
- Improves the accuracy of patient identification: uses two identifiers when transporting patients between units/departments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Primary Shift: 10-hour Shifts, variable start times plus call requirement.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma/GED, General Education (Minimum)
- Vocational/Technical Diploma, Includes the ability to verify on the job training of participating institution. (Minimum)
Work Experience:
- 1 year Surgical procedures. (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) BCLS Certification Upon Hire (Minimum)
- Certified Surgical Technologist Certified Surgical Technologist (Preferred)

Our compensation philosophy
We offer a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base pay range shown generally applies to the greater Los Angeles area and may vary based on work location. Our range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including knowledge/skills: relevant experience and training, education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors.
