What does the Senior Communications Specialist do?

The Senior Communications Specialist will develop and implement strategic communications plans and activities to promote and support Cedars-Sinai’s employee- and patient-facing initiatives. This individual will play a key role in identifying strategic, innovative news, feature and communications ideas for various communications channels; write and develop stories, collateral materials and other content; edit written materials; work with the visuals team to manage and assign photos; and assist in the production of internal publications and updates. Must demonstrate exceptional, accurate writing ability and highly effective, courteous, professional and respectful communication skills in daily interactions with physicians, nurses, staff members and others. Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast paced, high-volume environment with frequent interruptions.

Collaborates and works cross-functionally with internal collaborators in Marketing and Communications as well as with external partners throughout Cedars-Sinai. Handles basic design and implementation of communication materials through specialized templates. Works collaboratively with other members of the Organizational Communications team to manage priorities, workflows and shared responsibilities and assignments. Primary duties include:

  • Responsible for leading and/or supporting strategic communications projects and initiatives to further Cedars-Sinai’s organizational priorities as well as external and internal communications goals.
  • Strategizes, writes, edits and publishes content for Cedars-Sinai staff, medical staff and patients, including but not limited to news and feature stories, FAQs and talking points, memos and announcements, collateral copy, blog posts, collateral content website copy. Ensures all copy and content are clear, well-written, grammatically correct and factually accurate.
  • Covers clinical-departmental beats as assigned to support the Organizational Communications team. 
  • Contributes to crisis response, serving as an agile and flexible writer and working on-call as needed. 
  • Works in various digital platforms, including email campaign, intranet and digital channel platforms supporting content creation and distribution. 
  • Collaborates closely with External Communications, Social Media, Creative Services, Brand Strategy and other Marketing and Communications teams to promote high-value stories and communications, in support of departmental and organizational strategic priorities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships and processes with all internal cross-functional collaborators to effectively execute on collaboration needs. Interacts with physicians, research investigators, operations staff, patients and others in a professional and responsive manner, protecting patient privacy in all facets of work.
  • Delivers cleanly written, accurate stories and communications to support patients, staff, medical staff, programs and other aspects of Cedars-Sinai. Adheres to deadlines and internal style guides.
  • Serves as an all-purpose collaborator, supporting Organizational Communications team members across functions and beats with writing and strategy support as needed.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications or a related field required.

A minimum of 5 years of experience writing, editing, developing and delivering in-depth content or related communications experience required. A minimum of 7 or more years of experience writing, editing, developing and delivering in-depth content or related communications experience preferred.

Proven experience of at least 7 years in an academic medical center, hospital or healthcare, broadcast news, nonprofit or and/or foundation experience strongly preferred.
