What will you be doing in this role?

The Level I HLA Technician is a professional member of the HLA laboratory staff who works under direct supervision.  As much as ninety (90%) percent of the time is spent performing routine tasks requiring entry level cognitive, manipulative, and problem-solving skills.  Activities include operation and QC of test equipment, elementary level testing, interfacing with other hospital departments.  Additional duties include general support functions necessary for the routine operation of laboratory activities.

  • Sets up routine HLA procedures using approved procedures and protocols according to career-entry level standards of practice.
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in routine testing.
  • Validates and documents all personally performed test results according to established manual and electronic data management and reporting procedures.
  • Recognizes basic problems in test methodology and instrument function, initiates corrective actions, and develops the ability to resolve more complex issues with minimal consultation.
  • Uses established quality assurance protocols to ensure the proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and analytical procedures, including performing standards, controls, and instrument function verifications.
  • Prepares reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
  • Acquires a foundational understanding of HLA theory, genetics, nomenclature, laboratory testing procedures, and develops the technical and interpretive skills necessary for advancement.
  • Assists with the collection of research data, as requested.
  • Interacts with physicians and hospital staff to support quality patient care and promote a positive image of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of specimen requirements, normal ranges, critical values, and alternative HLA testing strategies.
  • Performs other duties and assignments as requested.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with at least one (1) year’s coursework in Biological Science or Chemistry, or equivalent experience. 
  • No experience required, but applicants with some experience in a clinical or research laboratory preferred.

We offer a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base pay range shown generally applies to the greater Los Angeles area and may vary based on work location.
