Tell us a little about the way you work at Guerin Children’s.
We are a nurturing team that has expertise with all kinds of pediatric cancers. Our support staff includes allied health professionals, clinic RNs, social workers, child life therapists, dieticians and chaplain services, enabling us to provide 360 degree care for our patients. In our quiet clinic, we’re able to spend ample time with patients and families, ensuring their understanding and comfort. We also have the expertise to conduct clinical trials that can benefit our patients.
What makes Guerin Children’s so special?
Cedars-Sinai already has an established, world-class adult oncology program. When you combine that with Guerin Children’s, we’re able to provide a continuum of cancer care for our patients from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, all within the same health system.
We recently enrolled a pediatric oncology patient on a phase 1 oncology clinical trial at Guerin Children’s for the first time. This patient was also the first patient enrolled on that clinical trial globally.
Every September is designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. What does this observance mean to you and the team?
I’m glad we have this opportunity to highlight pediatric cancer and the advances we make. It’s an important time to focus attention on funding and continued research.
What inspires you about this work?
I think it starts with our patients and families. Their care is our focus; just to provide them with the best care. Seeing our patients do better and helping families navigate this stressful process—that’s what keeps us motivated and grounded. And in the bigger picture, treatments are getting better every day. Outcomes are improving. There’s a lot to be hopeful about.
