What does this Health Information Technician I do?

Performs specialized health information activities necessary to organize, maintain and use electronic and paper patient health records. Depending on area assigned, may specialize in one or more clerical functions, such as coding clerical support, transcription processing and interface, coordination of record requests, image scanning quality auditing, or serve as the satellite rep in off-campus locations. Analyze I research errors. Participate in quality reviews. Compile and trend data and generate reports. Queries multiple electronic record and tracking systems. Understands chart organization and content, CSMC and external requirements related to chart documentation and privacy. 

Greets and assists guests and customers with walk-in release of information requests. Educate customers regarding information confidentiality and privacy regulations. Triage customer needs/service requests based on policy and critical thinking. Answer department "main" phone and medical line. Scan requests/authorizations into EMR. Copy paper or print electronic medical records pursuant to authorization, subpoena, or an internal request. 


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • High School or GED diploma required. Completion of some college courses or AA degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a health care setting or a related field or comparable level of education, training, or work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties required for this position required. 
  • RHIT preferred.

Skills/Experience Sought:

  • Basic knowledge of ICD-10-CM.
  • Detailed knowledge of documentation and privacy regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of workstation-on-wheels, EMR, EPIC, and hospital computer systems, such as MSOW. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook. Advanced keyboarding skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of the medical record content and chart organization. Strong data analysis and research skills for error corrections.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills. English language proficiency, written and spoken. Bi-lingual preferred 
  • Strong medical terminology skills
