What will you be doing:
The Unit Secretary assists patients with activities of daily living and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff and medical staff. Prepares and compiles records in the Medical-Surgical Unit. Initiates directions from physicians and nursing staff. Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing, and hospital policies and procedures and standards.
- Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient. Prepares medical records for new admissions and discharged patients. Logs all patients in the logbooks and in the computer upon admission, transfer, discharge or expiration.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses. Maintains awareness of the needs of the geriatric and general patient population. Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when a patient complains of pain.
- Provides explanation to patient and family prior to coordinating care to patients; answers questions.
- Supports all facets of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for a multi-disciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within a shift.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and accurately.
- Transcribes physicians’ orders within one (1) hours after being written. Enters and verifies orders in the computer system. Orders' supplies and printing weekly.
- Retrieves all Clinical Lab results from the computer and brings the results to the attention of the charge nurse.
- Answers telephone/intercom in a well-mannered and communicates information to appropriate personnel/family.
*Shift = Nights, 7pm to 730am*
Qualifications
Experience Requirements:
6-months to 1-year of related experience, preferred.
Hospital experience preferred.
Educational/Certification Requirements:
High School Diploma/GED, preferred.
Current BLS required. (BCLS certification preferred).
