The Charge Nurse in the Med Surg/Tele Unit (Short Stay Unit) is responsible for organizing, planning, and directing the operations of the nursing unit for assigned shift. Provides direct and indirect patient care in the progressive care setting. Communicates with Physicians/Nursing Unit Director/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Able to respond quickly and accurately to change in condition or respond to treatment.
In this role you’ll be doing:
Acts as a team lead to include overseeing the work of others, assigning or allocating work to team, and ensuring tasks are completed according to deadlines and quality standards.
Prepares monthly work schedules, makes daily patient assignments; schedules breaks and meal periods.
Effectively supervises and delegates work to all unit employees during assigned shift.
Assesses the staffing needs of the unit and makes any necessary decisions to effect the proper staffing adjustments.
Where appropriate, resolves problems or complaints among unit employees that arise during the shift concerning scheduling, assignments, breaks and meal periods, or other conflicts which may arise between unit employees. Resolves complaints regarding unit employees from patients, families and physicians.
Verifies that narcotics and controlled substances are counted and locked per hospital policy.
Works on special projects as assigned by the Unit Director. May be assigned additional responsibilities in the absence of the Unit Director.
Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS protocol.
Provides care to patients with compromised nutritional/metabolic status.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the patient care unit’s policies and procedures.
Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests results.
Participates in performance improvement activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Assoc. Degree/College Diploma, Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. (Minimum)
Bachelor's Degree, BSN (Preferred)
Work Experience:
Two (2) years of RN experience in acute care required. (Minimum)
One (1) year of Charge Nurse experience preferred. (Preferred)
One (1) year of Telemetry experience preferred. (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications:
RN State License Current California Registered Nurse Licensure. Upon Hire (Minimum)
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS/ALS) Current ACLS certification (Minimum)
Current BLS certification. Upon Hire (Minimum)

We offer a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base pay range shown generally applies to the greater Los Angeles area and may vary based on work location. Our range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including knowledge/skills: relevant experience and training, education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors.
