Overview of Department & Mentor

Dr. Anja Karlstaedt is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Cardiology within the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her current research program applies a systems biology framework to understand the metabolic intersections between cardiovascular diseases in cancer, focusing on hematologic malignancies and colorectal cancer. She has developed computational tools, including the first mammalian metabolic network - CardioNet, to integrate multi-omics datasets into basic discovery-oriented studies. Her collaborative efforts are reflected in her active research projects, for which she serves as the PI of NHLBI and Foundation-funded studies.
Role Summary & Objectives
Provide a description of overall role including goals and objectives. This should highlight how this role will be an educational opportunity or foster collaboration. Include specifics of the project, skills, and techniques the candidate will learn or be trained on.  
The internship will provide educational and career development opportunities in general laboratory techniques and cardiovascular research. The candidate will be trained in standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, westernblotting), physiological animal models and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and flux analysis. In addition to technical skills, the candidate will develop project management skills, learn how to document experiments on a day-to-day basis, and analysis as well as interpretation of data.

Role Activities & Timeline
Provide a detailed description of the activities that will be completed during this appointment. For interns, this should include specific information regarding mentorship and curriculum, including an intended timeline for the activities. 
The internship will be for a year starting in November 2024 with weekly 2-4h of laboratory activities alongside trained and experience research staff. Intern appointment to be extended on a quarterly basis.

Required Education & Experience 
•    Must be 18 years of age or older.
•    Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
•    Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
•    INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship. 
•    VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
