Raj Makkar, MD is a world-renowned leading expert in interventional cardiology and is one of the most widely cited researchers on the management of valvular heart disease. He has performed the greatest number of transcatheter valve implantation (TAVI) procedures in the world and has led the field in advancing the procedure to ensure the best outcomes for patients. In 2020, he performed the most transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures with the MitraClip system in the United States and is the national principal investigator for mitral valve replacement research studies. He has authored over 500 manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters in peer-reviewed literature including practice-changing contributions in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet. He has lectured extensively around the world and regularly performs live case transmissions for major international conferences to demonstrate cutting-edge interventional cardiology techniques to a world-wide audience. His research interests focus on novel transcatheter therapies to treat structural heart disease, with a focus on studies that directly demonstrate improvements in patient outcomes. Since 2010, he has been the Stephen R. Corday Chair in Interventional Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai and has led the clinical program and trained over 50 fellows both from within the United States and internationally.

What will you be doing in this role?

The Research Internship program provides students and trainees an opportunity to develop basic research skills. Interns in this program are provided the opportunity to experience and observe many different aspects of basic, translational and/or clinical research. This program offers interns a unique experience, which is intended to provide a wealth of knowledge about the numerous options for a career in healthcare research. Typically lasting not more than a twelve-month period, this internship will expose participants to a diverse spectrum of clinical and non-clinical based research investigations. Under direct supervision from the assigned Postdoctoral Scientist, senior-level Research Associate, or Principal Investigator, the intern will receive foundational research mentorship. The intern will be oriented to the Institutional Review Board and trained on Human Subjects. The intern will also be introduced to new and innovative research methods and techniques. 

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives instruction & training in the areas of basic, translational, and/or clinical research.
  • Receives orientation to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and other Human Subjects Courses.
  • Shadows staff and gains exposure to a variety of scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Provides support with research data collection and data entry, literature searches, basic patient screening tasks, and may assist with basic scholarly writing.
  • Assists staff with keeping accurate and detailed project records of experiments and results.
  • May assist with the operation and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Observes and follows safety standards and procedures.
  • May be assigned increasingly advanced research laboratory support functions, dependent upon level of education and technical ability.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Life/Physical Sciences or related field, which includes a minimum of two years lab coursework. 
  • Basic understanding of general research objectives.

We offer a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base pay range shown generally applies to the greater Los Angeles area and may vary based on work location. Our range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including knowledge/skills: relevant experience and training, education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors.
