Responsible for application development supporting business objectives while providing mid-level expertise in software development lifecycle phases from concept and design to testing. Analyses, designs and builds component-based applications including introduction of an application layer, modeling techniques, component and object-oriented design, complex algorithmic coding, and systematic approaches to application integration. Works on new and existing applications. Performs hands-on coding and assists in architecting solutions. May serve as liaison to internal customers, research groups and various business support areas.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Designs, specifies, and builds component-based applications, including application analysis, modeling techniques, component and object-oriented design, complex algorithmic coding, and a systematic approach to application integration
  • Designs, develops, and supports applications written in various programming languages using current and new development technology including J2EE, JSP, Servlets, JavaScript, HTML, XML and Oracle. Has a solid understanding of web application development technologies and frameworks, including ASP.NET and Node.js.
  • Scopes, implements, tests and deploys new features and versions of core applications, databases and utilities. Use GitHub for version control and code management, including committing, branching, merging, and resolving conflicts. Use Jira to track and manage tasks, bugs, and feature requests.
  • Debugs and maintains deployments of core applications, databases and utilities.
  • Creates enhancements to primary and supporting websites, web applications and infrastructures.
  • Creates component/subsystem documentation. Produces design and technical specifications as needed for technical documentation.
  • Translates customer requirements, recommends system solutions, and formulates detailed specifications from which programs are written. Works closely with business partners to produce quality products that meet business needs.
  • Provides and supports technology infrastructure.
  • Liaisons with end users, research groups and other business support areas.
  • Participates in design and technical meetings. Provides technical documentation to internal business and design teams.

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Writes statistical analysis programs for papers, abstracts, and presentations, working with researchers, senior analysis staff and statisticians. Converts the results of analyses to tabular or graphic presentation formats, when requested.
  • Prepares data subsets for analyses for researchers, students, or statisticians, working with study personnel, senior analysis staff and researchers. Assists study coordinators/senior analysts in the cleaning, developing, and detailing the study databases.
  • Working with researchers and/or senior analysis staff, verifies drafts of papers, abstracts, and presentations. This work involves verification of main results by checking sample sizes, data derivation and dataset preparation, or full reproduction of all statistical analyses, including writing new original programs, as requested. Consults with original programmers, statisticians, other data analysis staff and/or researchers as appropriate.
  • Checks datasets created by other programmers or researchers for accuracy, completion, and clarity.
  • Documents datasets provided to others, original statistical programs, paper/data-checking work to the extent that others could easily locate files/programs, understand programs/data, and to readily check, rerun or update work performed. Also documents all the verification processes, including errors, and other issues.
  • Keeps study coordinators/project manager routinely advised of requests received, work progress and completion of work. Asks for help and information where appropriate.
  • Learns about and applies the resources both within the analysis group and throughout the Smidt Hearth Institute (other programmers, data managers, researchers, codebooks, manuscript files, locations of data, procedures, software, etc.). While keeping up with assigned work, serves as a resource for other members of the group and the department in areas of study, programming, software, or other expertise.
  • Depending on background and training, may conduct independent statistical analysis, translating research questions into analytic plans in consultation with PI and research team. Tasks may include data cleaning, data harmonization, data quality control, linking multiple data sources, data analysis and interpretation (e.g., multivariable regression analyses, survival analyses, etc).
  • Performs other duties as the need arises.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics or related field is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience managing application design, software development, maintenance is required.
  • 5+ years of experience developing critical, large scale customer facing web applications / sites with high volume and high-reliability requirements is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of research experience in computer applications to health care research preferred.
  • Applications programming experience using statistical packages (SAS, SPSS, STATA, S-Plus, R etc.). Experience with a higher-level programming language is a plus.
  • Knowledge of research methodology and familiarity with statistical reasoning.
  • Applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Must have outstanding interpersonal, communication and organization skills and the ability to work across company subject areas and functional units, and computer application experience.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage and prioritize multiple research tasks and possess a strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate integrity and respect for subject’s rights and individual needs.
  • Understanding of Unified Modeling Language tools and how they are applied to OO design. Unix, Linux and Windows operating systems. C#, C++, C skills helpful.
  • Technical understanding of data and relational databases and technical data design.
  • Ability to apply web development best practices and cloud-specific technologies. Implementing best practices to API gateway and cloud container that leverage the scalability, flexibility and safety of cloud infrastructure.
  • Critical thinking skills to understand user needs and business goals, and translate them into well-designed code.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interface with multiple teams.
  • Strong presentation skills, ability to explain technical considerations and recommendations to both peers and clients/stakeholders.
