Cancer incidence and mortality are generally higher in males than in females, but its underlying biology remains elusive. Bladder cancer is the poster child of cancer sex differences, having male-to-female risk ratios ranking 1st in mortality and 2nd in incidence. Our lab specializes in using cutting edge -omics technologies, a wide range of innovative animal cancer models, and organoids to elucidate the biological mechanisms of sex differences in bladder cancer; we recently published several works that pioneer new concepts on sex as a biological variable in cancers (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aar5598; DOI: 10.1126/sciimmunol.abq2630).
We are inviting talented and interested candidates to join our scientific endeavor at the Cedars-Sinai Cancer Institute of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles—the new home of a well-established research program that first began at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Ongoing projects are examining the effects of genetics, epigenetics, immunity and microbiota on the sex and gender disparities in bladder cancer. We also have projects in benign urologic diseases such as bladder regeneration/repair. Successful candidates will have opportunities to hone research, critical thinking, scientific writing, and leadership skills, while taking part in leading a new and budding field of cancer research. This position will also provide incredible opportunities to work on translational disease models with the support of talented clinicians and researchers specializing in cancer biology, epigenome, metabolism, aging, tumor microenvironment, etc.
