About the Smidt Heart Institute

The Smidt Heart Institute is home to a distinguished team of experts setting the standard for cardiovascular care in the United States. Bringing together 16 centers and programs, we diagnose and treat a full spectrum of heart and vascular conditions, from infants to those with advanced disease. Our institute combines compassionate care with a dynamic research enterprise, offering patients access to pioneering treatments. Our faculty and attending physicians excel across all specialties, including transplantation, stem cell therapy, congenital heart disease, women's heart health, valve disorders, arrhythmia, and hypertension.

Under the supervision of Vascular Surgeons, the Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive services to vascular surgical patients, including those in the step-down unit, consultative services, and in the outpatient clinic. The Nurse Practitioner coordinates all aspects of patient work-up and care, with responsibilities including:

  • Obtaining and performing history and physical examinations
  • Recording and interpreting pertinent data, including labs and diagnostic studies
  • Writing orders, discharges, and daily progress notes
  • Evaluating, treating, and diagnosing patients under physician supervision
  • Participating in daily interdisciplinary rounds
  • Coordinating patient care with physician and nursing staff
  • Assisting or performing bedside procedures within the scope of practice
  • Communicating with patients and families regarding care
  • Demonstrating skills necessary to deliver age-appropriate care
  • Participating in quality activities, including Unit Practice Committees


Qualifications

Education:

  • Master of Nursing Degree required 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse practitioner program required 

License/Certifications

  • Current State of California Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner License required 
  • National Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by respective accredited professional nursing organization such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) required 
  • Current NP Furnishing License required 
  • DEA license required 
  • ACLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required 
  • AGACNP strongly preferred 

Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience managing vascular surgery patient population preferred 
  • Inpatient NP experience
