A Little More About What You Will be Doing

The Medical Lab Assistant, CPT functions with general directions from senior technical personnel and reports to the Laboratory Manager. Responsibilities include performing blood draws, supply inventory, specimen storage, and assisting the processing bench as needed for lunch and end-of-day coverage. Performs all job duties with sensitivity to the patient population(s) being served.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and understand the daily phlebotomy schedule in the EMR
  • Prepares for patient blood draw based on the physician orders in the EMR
  • Understands where to locate and how to follow test collection requirements for each laboratory facility performing testing, including appropriate kits and paperwork required for esoteric testing
  • Collects the appropriate tubes required for each test order
  • Collects specimens while following policy and procedure and maintaining the integrity of the process with strict adherence to patient identification policy
  • Effectively communicates with physicians and physician teams when order clarification is necessary
  • Inventories supplies for the phlebotomy area, restock as needed and performs a weekly expiration date check of all phlebotomy supplies
  • Rotates stored patient specimens from refrigerator to freezer storage and discard old samples

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required

Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience required as a Medical Lab Assistant
  • 3 years of experience preferred

Licenses/Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association or American Red Cross required
  • Phlebotomy Certification CA (CPT 1) required
