What will you be doing in this role?

Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Nursing – Pediatrics the Supervisor, Child Life Services assists in the quality improvement process, program development, supervising/mentoring of staff, and performs other administrative duties as assigned while using the appropriate chain of command, as needed. The Supervisor, Child Life Services as an expert clinician, uses knowledge base, leadership and educational skills to direct and supervise the clinical performance of the Child Life staff. The Supervisor also serves as a resource person to the clinical staff and is responsible for providing developmental interventions, emotional support, therapeutic play and health related education to patients and families based on assessment as needed to all pediatric patients/families in the Medical Center. The Supervisor, Child Life Services will function in accordance with the Association of Child Life Professionals Scope of Practice and the Child Life Code of Ethics. The Supervisor collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to oversee and provide hospital pre-admission tours, emergency department interventions, grief and bereavement support, coordination of special events as approved by the Medical Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises day-to-day management of patient Child Life care assuring Cedars Sinai IPE and safety standards are met.
  • Monitors and reports on the productivity and the quality of services provided by the Child Life team.
  • Oversees the completion of mandatory employee competencies to meet regulatory requirements in collaboration with the Pediatric leadership team.
  • Supervises the daily operations of the Child Life department, providing budget oversight and reports to management.
  • Advises staff on patients’ developmental and behavioral issues and complements the plan of care for the patient.
  • Assess and interacts with patients and families using theories of human growth and development, family systems and cultural background. Implements services that provide a safe and therapeutic environment for individuals and groups, ages 0-21.
  • Prepares children for medical procedures or treatment using theories of child development and language that children understand.
  • Introduces coping strategies to help reduce anxiety, manage pain and enhance cooperation with the health care team. Provide support, encouragement and distraction during medical procedures.
  • Manages new hire Child Life orientation including shadowing rotations, classroom didactic, skills labs and Child Life competencies.
  • Encourages family centered care by providing information, advocacy and support to families of pediatric patients. Encourages and participates patient and family centered care.
  • Provides support to families confronting grief and bereavement issues.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree of Science in Child Development, Psychology Child Life or Related Field Required. Master's Degree preferred.

License/Certification:

  • Certified Child Life Services Certificate License (CCLS) required.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of Certified Child Life Services experience required.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in a healthcare and/or medical office setting required.
