Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Vice Chair of Research is a leadership position within Beverly Anesthesiology, reporting directly to the Co-Chairs of the Department of Anesthesiology. In addition to providing clinical care, the Vice Chair will lead and advance the department’s research mission. This role is responsible for establishing the vision, strategic direction, and infrastructure to expand and sustain a vibrant, multidisciplinary research enterprise. The Vice Chair of Research contributes to Beverly Anesthesiology and Cedars-Sinai’s overarching mission of excellence in patient care, research, education, and innovation.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the leadership of Co-Chairs of Anesthesiology, the Vice Chair will:
- Develop and implement a strategic research plan aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.
- Elevate the department’s national reputation through growth in extramural funding, clinical trial activity, scholarly publications, and visibility at national and international meetings.
- Cultivate an environment where research, teaching, and academic scholarship thrive.
- Oversee and expand extramurally funded research programs, ensuring sustainability and alignment with Cedars-Sinai’s strategic goals.
- Oversee and ensure effective administration of extramural funding, including compliance with all regulatory, financial, and reporting requirements for sponsored research.
- Build collaborative research networks with other anesthesiology departments and interdisciplinary teams to secure large, multi-institutional awards.
- Grow a robust, active research portfolio and laboratory or research team as an independently funded Principal Investigator. Lead the development of a collaborative research infrastructure, including mentorship programs, core resources, and shared facilities.
- Recruit and mentor physicians and research staff with demonstrated or emerging success in securing extramural funding.
- Champion the education and mentorship of the next generation of physician-scientists, integrating research opportunities into residency, fellowship, and student training.
- Monitor and report on key research performance metrics (e.g., grant portfolio, publications, collaborations).
- Foster accountability by reviewing physicians productivity, scholarly impact, and funding progress.
- Evaluate, pilot, and scale emerging technologies relevant to anesthesiology (e.g., AI decision-support, perioperative monitoring, precision analgesia, remote patient management)
- Participate in and strengthen interdisciplinary research and training programs across the institution.
- At the discretion of the Co-Chair for Academic Affairs and Research:
- Represent the department by serving on boards and committees, attending meetings, presenting and participating in other activities as required.
- Lead departmental and institutional committees in research.
- Offer consultation regarding recruitment, engagement, and employment of program staff as needed.
- Address or mediate interpersonal and professional conflicts within the research domain.
- Support other leadership roles within the department.
- Provide Anesthesia Clinical Services.
Teaching/Research
- Participates in teaching of house staff, fellows and students.
- Participates in evaluation of the performance of clinical fellows, residents, medical students, and research fellows.
Participates in departmental and institutional committees in training, research and clinical process activities.
Ensures compliance with state and federal laws, accreditation, professional and regulatory agency standards, including quality assurance and licensure requirements within the divisions and departments. Assist in establishing and maintaining a quality assurance program acceptable to the Medical Center as required by The Joint Commission, state and other agencies, which shall include a systematic review of the quality, safety, and appropriateness of services rendered.

Our compensation philosophy: We offer a competitive total compensation and benefits package to our physicians. The total pay range shown takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including knowledge/skills; relevant experience and training; education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors. This total pay range includes incentive payments that may be applicable to this role.
Pay Range: $545,896- $714,043 Total Cash Compensation.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Medical Degree or equivalent
- Board Certification in Anesthesiology
- Eligible for recommendation to the appropriate academic rank and appointment
- Minimum of five years of active research experience with a proven track record of extramural funding as a Principal Investigator leading a team or laboratory.
- Established record of peer-reviewed publications with the capability to serve as a principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects
- Proven record of accomplishments that document excellence in research, teaching and service consistent with appointment as associate or full professor in the tenure-track.
- National recognition for research excellence in a field related to anesthesiology
- Prior management and/or leadership experience
