Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The is a full-time member of Beverly Anesthesiology, reporting to the Co-Chairs of the Department of Anesthesiology.  In addition to providing clinical activities, the Vice Chair of Academic Development will work closely with the co-chairs to lead the department’s academic mission.  This position will be responsible for providing the vision, strategic direction, and environment to grow and sustain the expansion of department’s academic mission.  This position is involved in activities that support the department’s mission of quality patient care, research, education and training and quality services.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the leadership of Co-Chairs of Anesthesiology, Vice Chair of Academic Development will be primarily responsible to:

  • In collaboration with the Co-Chairs of Anesthesiology, lead and implement effective strategic planning for academic development initiatives in the department.
  • Develops and leads the academic mission of the department. 
  • Leads, develops, and implements faculty development programs.
  • Foster an environment that values and promotes academic faculty development and alignment, serving as the primary departmental advocate for investment and improvement in these efforts.
  • Engage physicians in programmatic development, transformation, restructuring, and or implementation.
  • Develop a plan for the periodic assessment of ongoing academic programs and implement change in response to faculty needs. 
  • Develop a program for the anesthesiologists for early career development – orientation and onboarding, lectures and workshops, and an outline for career development.
  • Establish mentorship program that pairs faculty mentors and mentees.
  • Promote faculty professionalism and well-being initiatives.
  • Act as a champion regarding faculty wellness, engagement, recruitment, and retention
  • Continue and enhance existing well-being initiatives to meet faculty needs, while employing best practices in this area and creating accessible resources for faculty.
  • Plan and implement programs for all faculty to enhance peer-mentoring opportunities, transparency, and accountability in professional development.
  • Develops evaluation processes and metrics for faculty development and leadership programs to ensure efficacy and continuous improvement.
  • Participates in the advancement of extramurally funded research programs. 
  • Collaborates and fosters an environment wherein excellence in research, teaching and scholarship can flourish. 
  • Dedicate and commit to teaching and training students, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary training programs. 
  • Advances the national reputation of the department by increasing academic productivity and representation at national and international conferences. 
  • At the discretion of the Department Co-Chairs:
    • Represents the department by serving on boards and committees, attending meetings, presenting and participating in other activities as required. 
    • Leads departmental and institutional committees in research.
    • Direct and oversee department academic performance activities and provide leadership and clinical direction in areas of assigned responsibilities. 
    • Offers consultation regarding recruitment, engagement, and employment of program staff as needed.
    • Support other leadership roles within the department. 
  • Leads departmental and institutional academic committees.
  • Ensures compliance with accrediting regulatory agencies, standards, policies, and procedures are defined by the hospital. 
  • Offers consultation regarding recruitment, engagement, and employment of program staff as needed. 
  • Assist with addressing disciplinary issues and mediate interpersonal conflict within the department. 
  • Provide Anesthesia Clinical Services. 

Teaching

  • Participates in teaching of house staff, fellows, and students.
  • Participates in evaluation of the performance of clinical fellows, residents, medical students, and research fellows. 
  • Participates in departmental and institutional committees in training, research and clinical process activities.

Ensures compliance with state and federal laws, accreditation, professional and regulatory agency standards, including quality assurance and licensure requirements within the divisions and departments.  Assist in establishing and maintaining a quality assurance program acceptable to the Medical Center as required by The Joint Commission, state and other agencies, which shall include a systematic review of the quality, safety, and appropriateness of services rendered.

Our compensation philosophy: We offer a competitive total compensation and benefits package to our physicians.  The total pay range shown above takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including knowledge/skills; relevant experience and training; education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors. This total pay range includes incentive payments that may be applicable to this role.

Pay Range: $545,896- $714,043 Total Cash Compensation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Medical Degree or equivalent
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology 
  • Unrestricted California license as Physician
  • Medical Staff membership in accordance with requirements for same as specified in the CSMC and Medical Staff bylaws, rules and regulations.
  • Eligible for recommendation to the appropriate academic rank and appointment
  • Minimum of five years of active clinical experience with a proven track record of extramural funding. 
  • Prior management and leadership experience is required.
  • Proven record of accomplishments that document excellence in research, teaching and service consistent with appointment as associate or full professor in the tenure-track
  • National recognition for academic excellence in a field related to anesthesiology
