Why work here?

The Cedars‑Sinai COACH (Community Outreach Assistance for Children’s Health) for Kids mobile medical clinic is dedicated to meeting the immediate medical, behavioral health and community needs of pediatric patients in South Los Angeles who historically have been underserved in these areas. Services are provided in the community Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and periodically on weekends. Service sites include schools, places of worship, public housing developments, WIC (women, infants and children) centers, Head Start centers and other community agencies. Services are provided within the Cedars‑Sinai Community Benefit Service area, including Central and South Los Angeles, Watts and Crenshaw.

What will you be doing:

Cedars-Sinai COACH for Kids provides medically underserved children with transitional medical care and social support services, while connecting patients and their families to integrated quality healthcare and to other community resources. Mentoring will include Social Work career development, Social Determinants of Health Screenings as well as provide Case Management/Social Work support in transitioning patients and their family to an appropriate comprehensive medical home. This would include referrals for Primary Care Physician (PCP), behavioral, dental, vision and for other community resources such as Medi-Cal Enrollment, CalFresh, Legal, etc. which would be Community Resource experience and, in the field, (medically underserved communities) mobile clinic experience.

  • Acquire skills to connect families to a medical home, a Federally Qualified Healthy Center (FQHC), where children and their families will be able to receive medical and social services as needed.
  • Learn to document in CS-Link and will follow up all referrals made to the FQHC in REDCap. This will require trainings provided by CSMC.
  • Will shadow the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for the first three months or until the intern feels capable of meeting with the families knowing that the LCSW is able to assist at all times. The intern will be supervised by one of the LCSWs during the internship where all notes entered in CS-Link will be co-signed by the supervising LCSW. Will discuss each of these encounters with the LCSW gaining experience as a future Social Worker.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills relevant to a social problem area as a basis for engagement. Achieve and demonstrate those ethical behaviors and attitudes crucial to a professional, personal integrity and responsibility, self-discipline, self-awareness, and dedication to those he serves, including the capacity to consider the importance of culture, race, ethnicity, social economic status, age, gender, disabilities, and other social dimensions that influence the lives of individuals, families and communities.
  • The intern will be at the MMU on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 8am-3PM and will finish off their day by following up with referrals, documenting into CS-link and REDCap or attending supervision. At each site, the intern will receive training to interview families that have scheduled appointments. All documentation will be placed into CS-link. The LCSW will provide one hour per week, direct supervision that is required by UCLA. Mentorship will take place in the field at each site. This program requires 504 field placement hours to be completed by the 1st year student to receive their Master of Social Welfare degree. If the intern misses hours, they are required by UCLA to complete them before the end of internship.
