The Procurement Technician functions as an integral member of the heart and lung transplant team under the general direction of the cardiothoracic surgeon. Provides assistance with organ recovery, accompanies the cardiothoracic surgeon and performs pulsatile heart and/or lung perfusion. In a sterile environment has responsibility to set up the heart and/or lung pack on the back-table Assigned to perform scrub and support duties and has the responsibility to ensure smooth team work through the application of knowledge and effective communication with surgeons, nurses, scrub technicians, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, ancillary personnel, and other heath care team members. Responsible to ensure safe organ transport according to UNOS guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

The transplant technician performs a wide range of procurement procedures, reviewing donor documentation with surgeon and OPO Coordinator.

  • Verifies donor and recipient ABO data and print appropriate documents
  • Handles routine operational and support functions such as stocking supplies, cleaning work areas and equipment. Ensure adequate supplies and communicates re-ordering requests
  • Recognizes factors that affect outcomes; takes appropriate action to prevent or correct problems, including working directly with Helinet with last minute transportation issues and/or changes.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in preparation, scrub technique, self gowning and self gloving with assembly to setting up heart or lung pack on the back-table in a sterile environment
  • Verifies' specimen and organ identification and labeling.
  • Ensures delivery of donor blood to Blood Bank and Main Lab; organ delivery to the OR, recipient blood to HLA and donor lymph nodes/spleen to HLA.
  • Responds to procurement notification. Keeps accurate time records. Confirms planned recipient is designated recipient on match run. Prepares paperwork/iPad. Prepares recovery bag with appropriate instruments, ice, and preservation solution and surgeon preferences. Establishes communication with recipient OR and OPO.
  • Ensures integrity of organ. Maintains sterile technique. Prepares preservation solution and equipment. Completes' organ perfusion, packaging and labeling according to UNOS guidelines. Delivers organ and completes organ check-in with OR. Delivers samples to Blood Bank.

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent experience (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree, (Preferred)

Work Experience:

  • 6 months Clinical Experience (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License (Required)

Travel Requirements:

  • 40% Transporting/Coordination of organ procurement
  • Transport self to/from hospital or airport
