Clinical Lab Assistant, Part-time - Clinical Laboratory, Marina Del Rey Hospital

Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for collecting blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture, and for receiving clinical specimens in the laboratory computer system. Additional responsibilities include performing clerical tasks, processing send-out and pathology specimens, greeting and assisting outpatients, ordering and entering test orders into the computer system.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Collects proper and adequate blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary puncture technique, following established laboratory policies and procedures for specimen collection and handling. 

Properly identifies patients' protocols collection and labels all specimens correctly. Documents collection information.

Regularly reviews outstanding specimen reports for the laboratory, microbiology, and blood bank during their shift to identify any uncollected tests and takes appropriate action to collect, add, cancel, or reorder tests as needed.

Processes outpatients accurately, giving instructions and supplies for specimen collection. 

Delivers specimens to the appropriate laboratory section in a timely manner.

Processes all orders accurately, in accordance with turnaround time policies. 

Communicates, documents, and follows up on all unclear or discrepant orders, and reports any issues or concerns to the Supervisor or Director.

Accurately and promptly performs clerical tasks, including the use of the laboratory computer system.

Maintains phlebotomy and meals/breaks logs accurately and in a timely manner.

Knows and applies criteria for specimen rejection.

Plans, organizes, and prioritizes workload effectively, responding promptly and accurately to all requests (STAT, timed, etc.), as well as to any problems or inquiries requiring assistance

Consistently demonstrates the values of teamwork by understanding and supporting the needs of both laboratory colleagues and other departments. Collaborates to achieve shared goals, offers assistance, and responds promptly to requests from patients, physicians, nurses, coworkers, and others. Assists with new employee orientation as requested by the Supervisor

Selects and uses Personal Protective Gear appropriately, Adheres to all laboratory safety protocol. 

Accurately processes reference lab test requisition and specimens in accordance with the reference lab’s specifications


Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

- High school diploma/GED required
- Bachelor's degree preferred

Experience:

1 year acute care experience preferred

Licenses:

- CPT- Phlebotomy Certification license required 

Physical Demands:

- Able to perform moderate lifting. 
- Able to sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. 
- Able to read papers and online documents. 
- Able to operate standard office equipment. 
- Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
