The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse- in-Training (WOCN Nurse- Intern) participates in providing wound, ostomy, and continence services actively working toward becoming a Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN). In collaboration with a CWOCN, the WOCN Nurse-Intern will provide consultation, education, and clinical expertise to deliver direct care for patients requiring WOC nursing care to support high quality outcomes. The WOCN Nurse-Intern will partner closely with healthcare providers and clinical staff, the WOC Nurse-Intern ensures care is aligned and consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, the Plan for Provision of Nursing Care, the Plan for Provision of Patient Care, CSMC Code of Conduct, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan and Professional Organization Standards.

As a WOC Nurse-Intern:

  • Collaborate with CWOCN to develop a plan to provide optimal care for patients with complex wounds, ostomies, fistulas and incontinence in conjunction with patient, family/caregivers and members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Under supervision of a CWOCN provides pre-operative and post-operative ostomy care, including stoma site marking, patient/ family education and emotional support 
  • Participate in hospital wide initiatives for Pressure injury prevention, ostomy  and continence care management including data collection, quality improvement projects, protocol development and product evaluation
  • Acts as an educator, providing staff education and workshops related to WOC nursing specialty and healthcare providers in areas of expertise 
  • Acts as a expert consultant for colleagues, physicians and community at large in specific area of clinical expertiseto optimize patient outcomes
  • Participates in research activities when opportunities arise and demonstrates understanding of human subjects protection research, approval of human research through the Research Compliance Office, and control of research projects in the clinical area

WOC nursing specialty -specific product or materials to the Value Analysis Committee to support evidence-based clinical practice and cost-effective patient care


Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; MSN preferred

License/Certification/Registration Requirements:

  • Current and Active RN State License California State RN License required
  • Certified Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse Board Certification - Wound within 180 Days of hire
  • Certified Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse Board Certification - Ostomy Care within 180 Days of hire
  • Certified Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse RN Board Certification - Continence within 180 Days of hire

Experience:

  • 1 year of demonstrating skill in planning, teaching, and directing required
  • 2 year of knowledge of Ostomy and Wound Care preferred
