The Senior Clinical Bioinformatician works under the strategic guidance of the Division Director. Develops and maintains bioinformatics tools and pipelines, contributing to the enhancement of genomic data analysis and interpretation. The Senior Clinical Bioinformatician aids in the division's quality management program and strives for operational excellence. Working alongside faculty and the operations team and contributing to aligning bioinformatics efforts with the division's goals, meeting both immediate needs and long-term objectives. Identifies opportunities and makes recommendations to leadership on services provided. The Clinical Bioinformatician is committed to patient care, applying bioinformatics practices with an understanding of the patient population's needs to positively impact clinical outcomes. Leads and participates in process improvement and new testing projects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs data analyses for clinical genomics testing, including quality control functions consistent with the Division's Quality Management Plan.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and maintains bioinformatics analysis pipelines for clinical genomics service, including NGS.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and maintains tools for data mining and quality control of clinical genomic testing in accordance with the Division's Quality Management Plan.
  • Assess data analysis workflows, identifies opportunities to automate analysis, reporting and QC, implements in collaboration with laboratory leadership.
  • Collaborates effectively with faculty, variant scientists, and laboratory operations teams for efficient delivery of clinical services.
  • Evaluates the current landscape, identifies opportunities, and makes recommendations to leadership on the expansion of services provided.
  • Leads and participates in divisional, interdivisional, interdepartmental development projects for new testing and process improvement.
  • Acts as a project manager when required.
  • In collaboration with faculty and operational leadership, effectively adjusts priorities according to the workload, aligning to business and/or operations plans and to meet the needs of the Division.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest developments in bioinformatics, computational biology, and clinical genomics to assist in identifying, evaluating, and incorporating relevant algorithms and software.
  • Educates and mentors colleagues, investigators, fellows, and students in bioinformatics, fostering an environment of continuous learning and development within the division.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's Degree in Bioinformatics, computational biology, or related field.
  • Doctorate Degree in Cancer genetics, human genetics, or applicable biological science is preferred.


Experience and Skills:

  • Five (5) years of experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining NGS pipelines.
  • Five (5) years of experience with common amplicon-based and/or hybrid capture sequencing bioinformatics open-source tools and databases.
  • Four (4) years of experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining NGS pipelines in a clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with common programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Perl, python). Advanced expertise with one or more programming languages. Familiar with Linux environment and bash scripting. Use of high-performance computing, including schedulers, associate tools, and data storage strategies. Use of version control systems such as Git.
  • Familiar with medical and biological terminologies, bioinformatics resources, and national biological databases.
  • Collaborate with laboratory operations and faculty teams to efficiently deliver quality patient care.
