The Genetic Counselor III will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic and other settings as appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
- Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
- Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
- Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s). Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
- Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
- Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
- Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
- Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.
- Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services. Provides case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
- Contributes to quality/development of clinical services, participates in specialty sections, and coordinates specific services or specific projects.
- Actively participates in outreach, education, and training activities.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, competency skills and expertise in delivery of all GC clinical services.
- Leads other counselors, clinical programs or research projects, as needed. Serves as mentor for new/inexperienced staff. Coordinates and delivers education & training.
- Coordinates regional or national projects and/or committees, and may participate on regional or national projects and/or committees.
- Develops/manages programs.
Qualifications
Education, Experience & License/Certification Requirements:
- Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling required.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in genetic counseling and competent in all genetic counselor core functions.
- American Board Genetic Counselor (ABGC) Certification required upon hire. ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991 may still be considered).
- California Genetic Counseling License (Full or Temporary) required upon hire.
- Demonstrates refined analytic and diagnostic reasoning skills.

Our compensation philosophy
We offer a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base pay range shown generally applies to the greater Los Angeles area and may vary based on work location. Our range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including knowledge/skills: relevant experience and training, education/certifications/licensure; and other business and organizational factors.
